The 26-year old has already become a popular figure with the Amber Army having assisted Harrison Dunk’s late winner against Stevenage last month, played an important role in the comeback against York City a week later, before making his first full start for the club last weekend against Yeovil Town.

The Irishman also notched up his first two goals for the U’s in the 3-2 away win at Huish Park, and Gaffney gleefully recollected both with fondness.

He said: “It was obviously a dream first full debut for the club and beforehand all you really picture is winning the game, or even just scoring the one goal. But to have scored the first two was brilliant, and it was made all the more better by the fact we went on to win the game.

“I remember a few moments before I scored the first goal, I laid the ball off to Hughesy and then made my run into the box. I was actually making a run to help out Harrison, but he likes to cross it so when he delivered the ball, it just fell for me and it was a case of tapping it home.

“As a striker you have to be in the right place at the right time, so I just did what I could to get in there and luckily it paid off.

He continued: “The second goal was slightly different, because there was a bit of a goal line scramble, and all I was trying to do was get a clean connection on it and knock it across the goal.

“It obviously found a fortunate route into goal, but they all count and I was pleased that it went in.”

Meanwhile also in this week’s publication, we catch up with U’s goalkeeper Will Norris who is currently on loan with Braintree Town, Captain Mark Roberts pens an article of his own, whilst the regular columns with Chairman Dave Doggett, Manager Richard Money and Chief Executive Jez George are also included.
