U's fall to disappointing home defeat
Cambridge United U18s fall to a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Barnet FC.
The U’s were unable to follow up on their midweek FA Youth Cup win over Hayes & Yeading, and will be disappointed to have let a game that was within their grasp slip away.
A chance for Ryan Harnwell which had the Barnet keeper scrambling to avert the danger was an early indication of the U’s bright start to the game. However, it was the away side that broke the deadlock, when some good initial work down the right flank was finished in style with a fine individual goal to give the Bees the advantage.
United responded well and created some very good goal scoring opportunities. When Matthew Foy and Dylan Williams linked up in midfield to find Leon Davies on the right wing, he provided a great cross to Ryan Harnwell, which the youngster headed home from point blank range to level the game on 25 minutes.
The U’s carried their momentum into the second period and continued to look threatening, with both Jordan Brown and Josh Emmins going close. However, Barnet struck on the hour mark giving the U’s another deficit to chase and this time there was no response.
Although United continued to play with good attacking flair and even managed to get the ball in the net only for Harry Darling to be adjudged offside, they struggled to break down a well-organised Barnet defence.
The away side completed the score line on 70 minutes when they turned defence into attack from a U’s corner, breaking up field from their own end of the pitch before finding the back of the net to resign Cambridge to a 3-1 defeat.
Next up for the U18s an away trip to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday 14th November.
