CONOR NEWTON REFLECTS ON POSITIVE WEEK FOR THE U’S
Conor Newton is hopeful the U’s can continue to produce exciting performances like Saturday’s 3-1 win over Notts County at the Abbey Stadium and is enjoying his new midfield role.
Having played in a centre defensive position in the last two fixtures, the 24-year old is thriving in his more suited role and is delighted to be combining with Luke Berry and Everton loanee Ryan Ledson in a lively trio.
He said: “I have really enjoyed playing in the new role, it’s one I feel that I am more suited to playing. Ryan has come into the club on loan and he has been brilliant, so I’m really pleased with that.
“Obviously there is nothing better than winning football games, and two in the space of four days means that everyone is in a good place. So I hope we can continue to play some good football because I feel we have combined well.”
He continued: “We had to get our heads together at half time and came to the conclusion that it wasn’t good enough in the first half and that we needed more energy and drive going forward. So to come out after the break and score a goal within five minutes was a real bonus and we capitalised on that by going on to get two more.
“The dressing room was bouncing when we were in there after the game and six points obviously helps to contribute towards that, but the way in which we got them also helps.
“We’ve scored seven goals in two games and we are playing some good stuff, hopefully we can continue to do just that because we’ll start to move up the table quickly.”
Looking ahead to this weekend’s Emirates FA Cup tie with Doncaster Rovers at the Abbey Stadium, Newton added: “Some might argue it is a bad time to have the FA Cup game because we are doing well in the League, but we want to do everything we can to progress in the Cup like we did last year.
“Having the game at home is always a positive so we’ll be looking to do our best in the competition.”
