DERRY HAILS “WONDERFUL” SECOND HALF DISPLAY

POST-MATCH REACTION: Shaun Derry

Manager Shaun Derry was elated that the U’s were able to produce a much-improved second half performance to claim a 3-1 win over Notts County at the Abbey Stadium.

Despite a one goal deficit at half time, the U’s pounced into action with Barry Corr slotting home a penalty five minutes into the second half, before goals from Ben Williamson and Luke Berry clinched back-to-back wins for United.

Speaking to the post-match press, the U’s boss described his satisfaction at the manner in which his side swung round their performance levels to secure the three points.

He said: “It was a wonderful second half performance.

“The players took all the information we gave them at half time and to be fair they knew they had under-performed in the first 45 minutes and really wanted to show everybody what they we were capable of doing.

“There was a slight edginess to our play in the first half but the substitutions worked for us and we had a lot more intensity.”

Commenting on a change in formation at the break from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2, Derry added: “We used the 4-5-1 formation in Morecambe and it worked for us, but it didn’t come off today.

“I think the change in attitude in the second half was a massive factor. The eagerness and intensity to run around the football field all afternoon to make it difficult for the opponent is one of the simple things, but they get over looked sometimes.

“Our defensive distances were ten yards further up the field in the second half, which helps having Barry Corr on the pitch because Williamson was able to work off a front man.”

Having claimed his first victory on home soil, Derry explained that if the U’s are to continue moving forward then form at the Abbey Stadium will be crucial and congratulated the Amber Army on their successful performance.

“Winning at home does feel a bit sweeter and if you are going to be successful, your home form has to be at a decent level. To back up Tuesday’s win with another one here this afternoon is great and I thought the fans were fantastic today.

“They really drove us down towards that attacking goal, and it was a great performance by everybody connected with the football club.”
