JEFF HUGHES JOINS U’S

United sign Jeff Hughes on two-year deal

Cambridge United have completed the signing of left midfielder Jeff Hughes on a two-year deal.

The 30-year old is the ninth player to walk through the doors of the Abbey Stadium ahead of the 2015/16 Sky Bet League Two season, and will team up with his new side in the midst of the club’s pre-season training schedule.

Having already bolstered the core of the squad for the forthcoming season, Hughes’ signature ensures the club have also acquired a creative edge for their midfield, with the former Fleetwood man also offering versatility, being equally adept on the left or in a central position.

Like many of his fellow arrivals this summer, the Northern Irishman boasts a C.V. brimming with experience, having played at Crystal Palace, Peterborough United, Bristol Rovers, Notts County and more recently Fleetwood Town, during his 12 year career to date.

With over 250 Football League appearances and 60 League goals across three divisions including the Championship at Selhurst Park with the Eagles in 2007/08, Hughes adds further pedigree to the U’s first team squad.

Commenting on the latest summer arrival, Cambridge United Manager Richard Money said: “We are absolutely delighted to have secured this signing and I would personally like to welcome Jeff to the club.

“He is another player who featured in League One last season and also has the experience of a recent promotion from this League with Fleetwood in 2014.”

He added: “Jeff will bring experience and composure to our midfield and is able to play both centrally and on the left, playing both in the attacking and holding midfield role.

“His goal scoring record from midfield is also very impressive and I am sure he will become an extremely valuable member of this season’s group.”

Reaction from Hughes is available on Cambridge-United.co.uk, whilst subscribers to CU Player will also be able to watch Jeff’s first interview with the club later today.

Supporter’s will have the opportunity to meet Jeff and the entire first team squad at this Sunday’s Open Day at the Abbey Stadium between 10am and 4pm. Click here to check out the full itinerary of events and activities set to take place throughout the day.
