CARLISLE 0-1 U'S

Liam Hughes' strike secures the points for United

LIAM Hughes' 48th minute goal was enough for United to take all three points at Brunton Park this afternoon.

Hughes found himself in space 20 yards out and fired his shot past Mark Gillespie in the Carlisle goal.

The U's began the first half brightly, with Elliott and Simpson linking up well early on before Rigg and Dempsey both had half-chances for the hosts.

O'Hanlon came closest for Carlisle on 21 minutes, his header bounced off Chris Dunn's crossbar for a goal kick.  On 26 minutes Tom Elliott headed Liam Hughes' dangerous delivery wide, before Hughes fired harmlessly wide from distance on 28.

Donaldson's wicked delivery was met by Elliott on 28, however he was penailsed for a foul on Carlisle keeper Mark Gillespie.

The U's were quickest out of the traps for the second period and the early pressure was rewarded when Hughes fired home from 20 yards after good work from Donaldson and Kaikai.

Hughes found himself in a similar position on 56 minutes, however this time he fired over Gillespie's bar.  Assamoah was proving dangerous for the hosts, on 66 Chris Dunn bravely saved at the strikers feet before Josh Coulson thwarted the Blues' front-man on 76.

One minute later and Harrison Dunk was inches away from making it two-nil.  He started the move down the left, linking up with Kaikai who then found Elliott who drove the ball across the box for Dunk who couldn't quite convert the chance at the back post.

The hosts almost grabbed an equaliser on 82, Hughes clearing off the line before Chris Dunn was on hand to thwart Mark Beck.  In the blustery conditions, United saw the game out well to secure three away points for the fourth time this season.
