UNITED EARNED THEIR “JUST REWARDS” IN PLYMOUTH SAYS DERRY

POST-MATCH REACTION: SHAUN DERRY

Cambridge United Manager Shaun Derry was thrilled by the U’s determination to complete a valuable 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle this afternoon.

The men in Amber and Black delivered another impressive display in Sky Bet League Two to grasp three points at Home Park, with an early goal from Ben Williamson and a late strike by Luke Berry sealing the win.

Speaking post-match, Derry hailed the quality and character that his side produced which resulted in a successful 574 mile round trip to Devon.

He said: “It was a fantastic performance once again and we had to get that right in order to earn our just rewards.

“With the two players up front, it really set a precedent for the pressing game that we played. I have got a way of playing and the players are really taking those messages on board now and the group are so keen to do well.

“I was pleased to see the way we dug in after Plymouth scored their goal and we didn’t fall flat or feel sorry for ourselves. Instantly as soon as they scored we were back on the front foot and thoroughly deserved the three points.

“It will certainly make it a much nicer trip home.”

Discussing the winning goal in the tussle and where it leaves his side following three successive League wins, Derry added: “It was a good finish from Luke and that is a big moment for us.

“He has an ability to find the right places in and around the box and then on top of that is he is a good finisher. Luke put a lot of pressure on the back four today, and there was certainly no good luck in that.

“We knew were playing a very tough team that would come out in the second half and cause us problems. However, we managed to find a second gear and put them on the back foot, which culminated in my opinion us scoring a rightful second goal.”

The U’s boss continued: “The result gives us a chance to enjoy the Christmas period and I want us to look forward. I want to continue seeing a progression in our displays and hopefully our results.

“It’s important we clearly enjoy the trip home, we must enjoy the wins but then restore our professional heads from tomorrow morning and look ahead to Mansfield at home next Saturday.”
