With his leadership qualities coming to the fore since arriving at the Abbey Stadium in May, United Manager Richard Money officially named Roberts as the man to lead the U’s out on to the field of play this campaign last week.
Having received the accolade for the third time in his career, the central defender expressed his gratitude and declared a determination to set an example.
“To have received the club captaincy is a massive honour,” said Roberts.
“I have been captain at two clubs before but I certainly wasn’t coming to Cambridge with the expectation of being captain, so when the club announced it last week it really was a massive honour for myself and my family.
“I am very proud of the fact that I will get to wear the armband and I always do what I can to lead by example, regardless of whether I am wearing it or not. It’s up to me to set the example for others to follow and I am looking to do the manager’s decision justice.
“We have plenty of fantastic characters in the dressing room and true leaders as well, so I’m sure I won’t be alone in helping the team out.”
