U’s Vs Millers – Match Preview
Cambridge United will tonight begin their 2015/16 Capital One Cup campaign against Rotherham United at the New York Stadium, 7.45pm kick off.
A 3-0 win over Newport County at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday saw Richard Money’s men get off to the best possible starts for the new Sky Bet League Two season, and the U’s boss will be hoping for a similar situation as his side return to cup action.
United have been drawn against Steve Evans’ side, who suffered a contrasting start to their new campaign at the weekend where they fell to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of MK Dons.
The Amber Army could perhaps be forgiven for expecting goals in the encounter, given that the last three meetings with the Millers have produced no less than 15 goals.
Tonight marks the first fixture between the sides since February 2001, where the South Yorkshire outfit toppled the U’s 3-0 to avenge a 6-1 demolition by the men in Amber and Black earlier in the season.
Over 300 U’s supporters have secured tickets for the first round clash and are set to make the journey up the A1 this evening to aid United with their backing.
Manager Richard Money has all but Rory Gaffney and Jeff Hughes at his disposal for the fixture, with the pair still in the latter stages of their respective recoveries. Talking to Cambridge-United.co.uk about the fixture, United’s boss commented: “We’ll approach the game in a similar mind set to the way we did for Birmingham last year, and if we can play like we did there then we’ll come back relatively pleased.
“We have drawn a Championship team away from home, which is the hardest you can get in the competition at this stage but we can treat it with a little bit of calm and comfort knowing that the result is not the be all and end all.
“We are obviously not going there to try and lose, because if we win great and if we play well then we know we have a chance to win.
“I think if we see more signs of the side bedding in, with more team movement and the team ethos, then it will be a successful night.”
He added: “We saw what a good FA Cup run can do to a season last year because that has absolutely transformed the football club.
“I’m not sure the Capital One Cup carries the same kudos as the FA Cup but ultimately it is a game we want to win and if we can draw a big team in the next round and can grab the headlines again, we’d certainly take it.”
