U'S CONFIRM GAFFNEY SIGNING

Rory Gaffney set to join the U's in January

CAMBRIDGE United can confirm that Rory Gaffney will join the Club at the beginning of the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old striker will join the U's from Irish Premier Division side, Limerick, on 1st January 2015.

Gaffney joined Limerick in the Summer of 2011 from Mervue United, the club he joined as a youngster.  Rory scored ten times in his first full season for the Blues, helping them win promotion to the Irish Premier League in 2012, with several clubs vying for his services after his contract expired.

The 2013 season saw the Blues finish fifth in the Irish Premier, with Rory netting five times in 19 appearances.  The striker's 14 goals in 31 appearances helped Limerick secure a sixth place finish for 2014 and several personal awards for the player.

U’s Chief Executive, Jez George, said: “We have watched a lot of football in the SSE Airtricity League over the last 12 months and Rory came to our attention towards the end of their season.  He have done all of our due diligence, Rory has been over to train with the team, he's met Richard and all the staff, looked around the city, watched us play and competed a medical before signing a deal.  We don't want to put him under any pressure but we are delighted to have secured Rory's signature on an eighteen month contract.  We feel he's got all the attributes to be a success in England and has ticked all the boxes as far as we are concerned in our recruitment process.  We are excited by his imminent arrival."

United Defender, Matteo Lanzoni, has joined Hartlepool United on loan until the end of December.
