U'S SECURE NELSON SIGNING

Michael Nelson signs for Cambridge United

CAMBRIDGE United have signed Michael Nelson on a one-year contract.

The 34-year-old centre-half joins the U's after agreeing the mutual termination of his contract at Scottish side Hibernian, where he has made two Championship appearances this season.

Nelson joined Hibs from Bradford City at the start of the 2013/14 season, making 39 appearances for the Edinburgh side.

Gateshead-born Michael spent the early part of his career at non-league level prior to signing for Bury in 2001.  He spent two seasons at Gigg Lane before being snapped up by Hartlepool United for £70,000 in 2003.

"The Admiral" went on to make over 250 appearances for Hartlepool over six seasons before joining Norwich City at the beginning of the 2009/10 season.

Nelson left the Canaries for Scunthorpe United in January 2011, spending a year with the Iron before joining Kilmarnock in January 2012.  In his first season with Kilmarnock, Nelson picked up a League Cup winners medal, helping his side defeat Celtic 1-0 at Hampden Park.

In January 2013, Nelson left Rugby Park for Valley Parade, Bradford City paying £30,000 for his services. He spent six months with the Bantams before moving to Easter Road in August 2013 for an undisclosed fee.

Speaking on the latest addition to the U's squad, Director of Football, Jez George, said: "We are delighted to have signed a player of Michael's pedigree and experience.  Once we found our that he was available and had negotiated the cancellation of his contract at Hibs, we moved quickly to secure his signature.

He is an excellent character, with a lot of Football League games on his CV and he will be a really important addition to the squad."

Michael has been handed squad number 18 for the 2014/15 season.
