Club Statement
The club would like to clarify the comments of our Head Coach, Richard Money, regarding the England C team that have been reported in the media over the last 48 hours.
Richard's intention was not to question the integrity of any individuals but merely to highlight a situation that could potentially benefit two rival clubs in our league. Certainly no offence was intended to any individual or club and his only motivation was to protect the interests of Cambridge United.
With both Barnet and Kidderminster now in the Football Conference, we believe it is a situation that should be discussed and addressed. Richard's assertion, which we support, is that two of our competitors have an unfair advantage because of the positions their senior football staff hold within the England C team.
As team managers of the representative team they will have the unique opportunity to gain knowledge and information about our individuals and therefore our team strategy and methodology during the season. As the Director of Football of Barnet and the Manager of Kidderminster, this should not be the case.
We should reiterate that we are not in any way questioning the integrity of Paul Fairclough, Steve Burr or any other individuals. We just believe that any representative team should have staff totally independent from clubs participating in the same competition from which the players are selected.
We will take this matter forward by articulating our views and detailed observations to the relevant authorities through the appropriate channels.
Again, our contention is not with the individuals or their clubs. It is that a situation should not exist which gives any club a privileged position compared to the other clubs in a competition. Richard and Cambridge United has the highest possible regard for Paul Fairclough, Steve Burr, Barnet and Kidderminster.
