U's slip to defeat in Wales
Jay Colbeck's fifth minute strike was enough to secure victory for Wrexham against Cambridge United on Tuesday night.Colbeck forced a great save from Nick Pope after good build up play from the home side but was on hand to tap in the rebound for the only goal of the match.
The U's lined up with just one change from Friday's 0-0 draw against Newport County, Josh Coulson replacing the injured Joe Anderson with Rory McAuley shifting to left back.
The game got off to a poor start from the U's and Wrexham looked threatening following their early strike with veteran Dele Adebola causing problems up front.
As the half wore on though, the visitors began to get a foothold in the game.
Kevin Roberts misjudged a header from close range following a corner that drifted over everyone towards the back post and Tom Shaw dragged two shots wide from 18 yards out.
Richard Money made two attacking changes at half time, bringing on Andy Pugh and Wolves loanee Johnny Gorman in place of Liam Hughes and Sam Smith.
Money's charges lined up in a more fluid system for the second period; Tom Elliott led the line with a trio the Gorman, Pugh and Harrison Dunk attacking from midfield.
The change nearly paid dividends within seconds of the restart, Pugh lobbing inches over the bar after being playing in down the right hand side.
The rest of the half was dominated by the U's but chances were few and far between and the final ball was too often wayward.
Northern Ireland international Gorman fired just over the bar from the edge of the area but Charlie Wassmer came the closest to an equaliser in injury time.
Tom Shaw's corner found the centre back charging in at the near post and his header looked to be goalbound until a deflection from a Wrexham defender's shoulder took it behind.
Despite coming away empty handed the U's can be pleased with their second half performance in particular and there were plenty of positives for Richard Money to ponder before Barrow are the visitors to the R Costings Abbey Stadium on Saturday.
